Holy Week and Easter Day in the life - Good Friday

Friday March 28th – Good Friday

Good Friday has always seemed like a strange name for this day to me. On Good Friday, we remember the day that Jesus is executed by crucifixion. This is why the universal symbol of Christianity is the cross.

Our Church have a service on Good Friday morning. Today, the cross at the front of the Church is ominously lit in red. Typically, this service is very sombre. It feels more like a funeral than a normal church service. Members of the church read passages from the Bible which detail the events of Good Friday.

The Church congregation are handed flowers. We all walk up to the front of the Church to lay our flowers at the foot of the cross. Today is called 'Good Friday' as, although the day marks a horrible event, Christians believe that the death of Jesus means good news for the whole world. By choosing to die on the cross, Jesus pays for the price for all the wrongdoings in the world so we can be reconciled with God. To be honest, it’s probably my least favourite church service of the year and I’d probably prefer not to go… but I think if you want Easter Sunday morning, then you’ve got to walk through Good Friday.

Good Friday is also a Bank Holiday, so the rest of the day is spent at home with my family and two tired kids recovering from the end of another busy term. It’s also a big day for football, and as a Derby County fan, I’m delighted to see the Rams beat Blackpool 1-0. Hallelujah!
