Sunday March 30th – Easter Sunday
As a kid, I remember Christmas morning being my favourite morning of the year. In anticipation of all the presents and the excitement, I remember never being able to sleep on Christmas Eve. Although Christmas is a huge event in the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday is by far the most significant.
Now as an adult, I can honestly say I get the same feeling of excitement and anticipation on Easter Sunday morning. Easter Sunday is the day when Christians all over the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Early on the Sunday of Holy Week, the Bible describes how a group of Jesus’ followers go to the temple where Jesus had been buried after his death. A large stone which would have been covering the entrance to the tomb has been rolled away and the body of Jesus isn’t there. Later that morning, the resurrected Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene before appearing to his disciples throughout the day. These events are the culmination of Lent and Holy Week. Christians believe that this was the most significant morning in history. It’s the central and most significant event in the Christian faith and good news for all of humanity.
On Easter Sunday, our Church has been visibly transformed. The curtains covering all of the stained-glass windows have been removed. The flowers which we left at the foot of the cross on Friday have now been attached to it. This service couldn’t be more different from Friday's. It’s hard to imagine how joyous the disciples themselves must have felt that morning – but in our Church, it’s more of a party than a service. After the service we have chocolate cake and prosecco (this was a new addition for this year!) before going home for even more chocolate and open our Easter Eggs.
One of the other great things about Easter Sunday is that we get another Bank Holiday the day after!
