Black History Month is not only a time to honour the rich contributions of Black individuals throughout history, but also an opportunity for us to reflect on our collective journey and the narratives that shape our understanding of diversity and inclusion. At GC we believe in empowering people from all backgrounds, and we recognise that every voice matters in creating a more inclusive workplace.
As we enter Black History Month this year, we are reminded of the significance of this celebration and the importance of the theme: 'Reclaiming Narratives'. This theme resonates deeply with our company values:
- Empower People: This month, let us commit to amplifying the voices and stories of our Black colleagues. Encourage open dialogue and share experiences that challenge stereotypes and broaden our perspectives.
- Build on Success: We celebrate the achievements of Black professionals who have paved the way for future generations. Let us learn from their successes and strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive.
- Stronger Together: Unity is our strength. By embracing diversity and fostering collaboration, we can create a culture that values different perspectives and experiences. Together, we can challenge narratives and drive meaningful change.
- Do the Right Thing: It's our responsibility to confront biases and injustices, both within our organisation and in society. Let us take this opportunity to educate ourselves, challenge assumptions, and actively seek to understand the experiences of our Black colleagues and communities. See events below.
- Make a Positive Difference: This month, let us engage in initiatives that support and uplift the Black community. Whether through volunteering days, supporting Black-owned businesses, or onsite events; every effort counts towards making a lasting impact.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us commit to reclaiming narratives – not just for October, but for every day of the year. Together, we can create a workplace that is inclusive, equitable, and representative of the rich diversity that strengthens our company.

EmbRace Events and Solutions Meeting:
Join our EmbRace EDI Network at Northspring, 44 Peter Street, Manchester, M2 5GP on the 16th October 2024 from 11-1pm. Where we'll discuss progress made via the Racial Equity Framework and further events and solutions and an opportunity to share cultural experiences and ways we can promote racial equity at GC.
