Our GC Education & Skills Wigan Training Centre recently teamed up with Wigan Council and HH Smith & Sons – they're big on social values and were keen to offer local young people an opportunity to get involved and see the work being undertaken in projects in their local area.
Our learners attended along with David McGarty and Jacqueline Morgan (construction tutors from Wigan TC) and completed a Stonemasonry workshop, got involved with the roof repair and listened to a session about how to enter this line of work.
Everyone had a great (but cold) time, and it's allowed our learners to see life outside of our workshop and expand their job aspirations.
David and Jackie said: "The experience was absolutely brilliant. Our learners took away so much from the day. It's not often you get to work on a heritage site, let alone one in your own town. We are extremely grateful to be working alongside Wigan Council and HH Smith and look forward to the next project."
Martin W (learner) commented that: "It was a really exciting day and it was great to see the things we are learning on a real site. We were also able to take skills back to the centre and put them into practice."
