Andy Reid’s story
Honorary Colonel Andy Reid MBE, an Army Veteran who was seriously injured in Afghanistan and has since become a passionate campaigner for people with disabilities and mental illness including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In October 2009, Corporal Andy Reid MBE was serving as a soldier in Afghanistan. While on patrol, Andy stood on a pressure plate improvised explosive device (IED). As a result of the explosion Andy lost his right leg below the knee, his left leg above the knee, and his right arm. He astounded people with his recovery, spending only 2 weeks in hospital before returning home. What he has achieved since then is little short of unbelievable.
In the 13 years since Andy’s injury, he’s become a motivational speaker, an author, campaign veteran and a co-founder of the Standing Tall Foundation which promotes the mental health and physical wellbeing of all community groups, by providing free professional support and services.
Andy won The Sun’s Millie Award for Overcoming Adversity in 2010 and was awarded the MBE in 2019 for voluntary service to veterans and to people with disabilities in St Helen’s.
Andy’s a survivor, not a victim. He wants to inspire and motivate others to be the best version of themselves. He also wants to encourage others to have honest conversations as well as regularly check-in with each other.
The session will be interactive, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel which will include the Co-Chairs of the Military Veteran and Reservist EDI Network at the end of the session.
