In our People and OD strategy, we have committed to nurturing growth within GC. As such, we have embarked on a project to support the creation of our leadership competencies. Having successfully created and embedded our GC values a number of years back, we have decided to take a similar collaborative approach to creating our leadership competencies.
What are they and why: Leadership competencies are skills, knowledge and behaviours that contribute to strong leadership. A leader with strong competency not only demonstrates proficiency in their own role but also cultivates the potential of those around them, contributing to a culture of growth and development within our organisation. While some competencies are universally essential, an organisation should also identify unique attributes. Introducing these will help us bring consistency to how colleagues are managed at GC, eventually they will be incorporated into our recruitment practices, our PRD processes as well as supporting tailored leadership training.
Our progress so far: Group SMT have started to develop these competencies. In a Group SMT session, we created a long list of competencies that will be shared and reviewed with SLT.
Next steps: A workshop with GC’s Senior Leadership Team is being held on 12th February to refine and narrow down the long list of competencies provided by Group SMT . Following this, we will invite colleague groups (ECCs, EDI networks, managers from across GC) to attend workshops to review and help define the leadership competencies. These sessions will be facilitated by Business Unit champions and HR & OD.
Getting involved: If you are interested in taking part in the workshops that will take place in March, please drop us a message, and we will invite you to the workshop.
