Corornavirus

Most of you will be aware of the current outbreak of Coronavirus in China and the recent confirmed cases within the UK. In light of this, I feel it is important that colleagues are kept informed of the latest position and associated health advice.

Whilst the Chief Medical Officer has raised the risk to the public from low to moderate to permit the Government to plan for all eventualities, the risk of individuals contracting the virus here in the UK is still considered low with only nine confirmed cases at present.

However, it is important to acknowledge there may be concern amongst our colleagues, particularly those who travel abroad regularly, attend international events and interact with overseas visitors.

Colleagues can refer to the latest NHS guidance which provides advice on symptoms, course of action and individual control measures to further reduce any individual risk. These include some basic steps such as:

  • Ensuring good hand hygiene - wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Minimise prolonged proximity to anyone coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze.
  • Discard used tissues in the bin straight away.

Don't...

  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

Some of our teams, e.g. Marketing Manchester; Midas, and International Trade are working closely with partners agencies to monitor the developing situation and impact this is having on travel and businesses. At present the Chinese Government has required all group travel to cease until the end of February.

In general, we do not expect colleagues to go on a business trip if they feel if there is a risk to their health. If you have any concerns, you are advised to talk to your line manager or contact HR Advice.

For the most up to date travel advice please refer to Visit Britain  for further information regarding travel trade, whilst travel advice for concerned visitors is regularly updated by the UK Government.

Colleagues should not be unduly concerned but should familiarise themselves with the latest guidance and ensure they undertake appropriate steps to reduce individual risk.

I will keep colleagues updated with any substantial changes. If you have any further concerns, please contact HR Advice.

Kind regards
