Early career

I studied French and German at university and enjoyed my degree. By my final year, I was unsure about my career path. During this time, I was involved in youth outreach work through a church in Sheffield, working with young people in different communities. This experience led me to consider teaching as a potential career.

I completed my PGCE and trained as a secondary school teacher, teaching French and German. I then worked as a senior teaching assistant in a primary school and taught French and German for about a year, which I enjoyed.

Changing Direction

After a period of time, I considered a different career option and spoke with a family member who worked in HR. The field sounded interesting, so I gained some work experience and began applying for entry-level HR roles. I secured a position as an HR Assistant and completed my Level 5 CIPD qualification.

Over time, I progressed to Employee Relations Specialist. In these roles, I advised managers on disciplinary, grievance, and performance management processes. I also completed a master’s degree in HR Management.

After six years with the company, I sought new opportunities to broaden my HR experience.

Joining GC

A friend who worked at GC suggested I check their website for vacancies. I applied for the Senior HR Advisor role and was successful. A couple of years later, I applied for and secured a position as an HR Business Partner.

In my current role, I work closely with the GC Employment SMT and operational managers, and support on operational people matters including, employee relations activities, change management, retention, recruitment, and colleague development opportunities. GC Employment is a large and constantly evolving area, which keeps the work dynamic and engaging.

Why GC?

I didn’t know much about GC before applying, but I was drawn to its values and the impactful work that The Growth Company does for people and communities. It’s always been important to me to work for an organisation that prioritises people.
